37-year-old wicketkeeper batter Dinesh Karthik has suffered a back injury and is reportedly doubtful for India’s upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 match against the Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh National Cricket Team.
The veteran wicket-keeper sustained the back injury during the 30th match of the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which was played between the Temba Bavuma-led South Africa-led national cricket team and the Rohit Sharma-led Indian national cricket team at Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday 30 October.

India won the toss and chose to bat first against South Africa. The Indian batters, except Suryakumar Yadav, struggled against the speed attack of the Proteas on the resilient surface and they were able to put 133 for 9 on the board. Dinesh Karthik failed miserably when he faced 15 balls in the match and scored only 6 runs.
Young left-armer Arshdeep Singh defended the goal, clearing Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw in his first over of the match. Also, Temba Bavuma was cleared by Mohammed Shami in the 6th over.
However, middle-class batters David Miller and Aiden Markram hit brilliant half-centuries to lead the Proteas to victory.
I know he had a problem – Bhuvneshwar Kumar on Dinesh Karthik
At the end of the 15th over of the South African innings, veteran wicketkeeper batter Dinesh Karthik was seen writhing in pain holding his back and on his knees.
The physio immediately came out to check on the veteran player and after a few minutes, Karthik saw the field walking while holding his back. Substitute wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant moved into the middle after Karthik walked away and he kept the wickets for the last 5 overs.
Meanwhile, veteran pacemaker Bhuvneshwar Kumar revealed at the post-match press conference that Karthik has indeed sustained a back injury.
“I know he had a back problem. It is clear that the physio will give a report and after that we will have more clarity,” Bhuvneshwar said during the media conference after the game.
The exact nature of his injury is unknown, but the PTI has reported that Karthik is a questionable starter for the game against Bangladesh.
The 35th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 will be played between India and Bangladesh at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday 2 November.
