During the Covid-19 pandemic, playing cricket became a challenging task, especially for Indian players who faced strict isolation measures and restrictions, especially when playing abroad.
These difficulties became apparent during India’s 2020/21 tour of Australia, which coincided with the first wave of the pandemic. Much drama ensued in relation to Covid-19 protocols between the second test in Melbourne and the third in Sydney.

In December 2020, an outbreak of Covid-19 in Sydney led to tighter restrictions in New South Wales. Cricket Australia considered the option of swapping the Third and Fourth Test venues or hosting both matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Indian cricket team was in the midst of this chaotic situation.

Sridhar described the tour as a chaotic experience and wrote about the incident in his book Coaching Beyond, where Cricket Australia had sent one of their officials to brief the team on do’s and don’ts after they completed their 14-day quarantine. Ravi Shastri did not seem happy with the suggestions made and quickly shut down the official.

“After patiently listening to this monologue, Ravi Shastri got up from his seat in the front row, took Bier’s sheet, tore it into 4 pieces and said, ‘Howard, cut this and sit down. We were told that once these 14 days were up we would have the same rights as Australian citizens. While you are dishing out this nonsense, the BCCI is talking to CA.
“Don’t give this piece of paper to any of my players. Do not board another bus to make this announcement. I’m not going to be a prisoner in my own room, not if life in Sydney goes on as usual. I’m going to have a beer tonight; you can join me if you want. Beer was surprised. He could do nothing but watch with thinly veiled disapproval as Ravi, Arun, Vikram and I sauntered down to the bar for a few beers later that evening.
